The city of Al Bayda or (El Beida )

البيضاء تعتبر ثالث كبري مدن ليبيا ومن المدن الرئيسية وعاصمة الجبل الأخضر . البيضاء والمعروفة تاريخيًا باسم بلغراي و زاوية البيضاء و بيضا ليتوريا ، كانت مدينة البيضاء عاصمة ليبيا سابقًا في عهد المملكة الليبية من عام 1963 حتي 1969 وتعتبر الآن من المدن الكبرى والرئيسية في ليبيا ، تعتبر عاصمة الجبل الأخضر وأكبر مدنها ومركزها الرئيسي والإداري حيث تعد ثاني كبرى مدن المنطقة الشرقية وأهميتها بعد بنغازي ، يبلغ مجموع سكان شعبيتها حسب تعداد 2006 العام للسكان 206,180 نسمة. مدينة البيضاء تسمى كذلك "بمدينة الثلوج" نظراً لتساقط الثلوج عليها شتاءً، وهي معروفة بجوها المعتدل صيفاً، أما في الشتاء فإن شتاء مدينة البيضاء بارد وتعرف كذلك "بعروس الجبل"، وهذه التسمية يطلقها سكان المدينة من فرط حبهم الشديد لمدينتهم.
البيضاء نويت كعاصمة جديدة لليبيا في فترة الحكم الملكي ، حيث كانت بها المباني الحكومية والإدارية الليبية مثل مجلس الوزراء و وزارة العدل وكان سبب عدم إعلانها كعاصمة رسمية بمقتضي الدستور هو إعداد المباني بها . إلا أن مقر العاصمة تغير بعد قيام ثورة الفاتح من سبتمبر.

كانت تعرف البيضاء بأسم بلدة بلغراي أو بلاغراى (Balagrae) عام 414 ق .م وترجمة كلمة بلغراي تعني التل الأجرد أو الرأس الصلعاء، وكانت تابعة لمدينة قورينا . كانت تشتهر المدينة بمصدر إلهام للعبادة بوجود معبد أعمدة اله الشفاء الشهير (Asclepium) أسكليبيوس وكانت مساحته 40 × 35 متر ، ومن أهم ماكانت تشتهر بها أيضاً العلاج النفسي عن طريق الحفلات الموسيقية و الحمامات وكما عرفت أيضاً بتفسير الأحلام، ومن اشهر من ولد فيها الأسقف سينيوس370 ميلادي.
وقد اكتشف ماكيرني في كهوف ضواحي المدينة فك بشري لإنسان نياندرتال Neanderthal الذي يرجع تاريخه 40 ألف سنة قبل الآن مما يشير إلى علاقاته مع الإنسان المكتشف في القارة الأوربية في كهف نياندرتال في المانيا . بالإضافة إلي اكتشاف في منطقة بلغراي قطع للعملة أصدرتها مدينة قورينا يرجع تاريخها إلى ما قبل عام 480 ق.م حيث يحمل أحد وجهيها نقشاً يمثل نبات السيلفيوم بينما تظهر على الوجه الأخر صورة دلفين .
